There is nothing you need to prepare or learn in advance of the workshop, but How We Sang Today will be used as a demonstration song, so feel free to brush up on that one! 

 


SOUNDS “right” QUARTET DAY — JUNE 1, 2019

     IT’S NOT JUST FOR QUARTETS!  DIRECTORS, MUSICAL LEADERS, ANYONE INTERESTED

      IN QUARTETING AND EVERYONE INTERESTED IN BARBERSHOP SOUND MAY ATTEND  

  

Location:                    Our Lady of the Assumption Church

                                    Basement Bingo Hall – 471 Main Avenue, Wood Ridge NJ

 

Date / Time:               June 1, 2019 • 9:00 am to 4:00 pm 

(We hope to offer morning coffee and lunch - salad, gluten-free wraps, and pizza)

Tenor of 2008 International Quartet Champion 4 Bettys, Approved SOUND Judge,

Master Director, International Faculty, and Sweet Adelines President-Elect

 

Classes:

1.  “Taking a Pledge” – Warmups

Warm-ups that quartets can do for personal use before rehearsal and group warm-ups to do together in order to promote quartet unity.

2. “A B C s” – Accuracy, Breathing, Blend Clarity and Cone

This class will use demonstration quartets and group discussion / participation

3. “RECESS” – Having fun

How to have fun AND productive rehearsals using coaching within the quartet, coaches from the outside, and the “5th ear.” Demo quartets will be created.

4. “Homework” – Individual Commitment                         

How each quartet member can/should work between rehearsal; music selection, individual and ensemble preparation for performances; individual and ensemble mental preparation.

5. “X, Y, Z, and Me!” – Expressive singing – YOU and ME!

How to sing expressively within our quartet’s capabilities and skill levels.  Demo quartets           

6. Public Coaching (if time permits)

 *Joan will be available to do private coaching on Friday night (1-2 sessions) and Saturday night (2-3 sessions) as well as one (1) session Sunday morning at 9:30at $50.00/ hour.

 

To request a one-hour session, the entire quartet must be registered for the workshop. Send written request to Sharon Vitkovsky at above address and list preferred days and times for coaching.  Sessions will be assigned on a “first-come first-served” basis and may be expanded to 2 hours if time is available.

Registrants will receive information regarding local eateries and hotels prior to the event.

ALL QUARTETS, MUSICAL LEADERS, AND OTHERS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND 

REGION 15’S SECOND ANNUAL QUARTET DAY – JUNE 1, 2019

 

On June 1, 2019 Joan Boutilier (Sound Judge, Queen of Harmony – Four Bettys, Chorus Director, and SAI President-Elect) will present a full day workshop (9:00am to 4:00pm) on the BARBERSHOP SOUND in Wood Ridge, New Jersey. 

This session is open to EVERYONE – Directors, Assistant Directors, DCP candidates, registered quartets, anyone looking for a quartet, and everyone who is interested in learning more about one of the foundational pillars of our craft. 

 

Topics will include: 

* Warm-ups – individual and group warm-ups that will promote unity 

* Accuracy, Breathing, Blend, Clarity, and Cone 

* Fun and Productive rehearsals – coaching within the quartet or using a “5th ear”

* Expressive Singing – within your quartet’s capabilities and skill levels 

* Individual Commitment – how to work between rehearsals, music selection, individual and ensemble preparation for performances

* Public Coaching – if time permits 

All sessions will be INTERACTIVE and demonstration groups will be created from among the attendees. 

There will be a fee (per person) and advance registration will be required to ensure that sufficient seating and materials are provided. We hope this will also allow us to offer morning coffee and lunch (details to follow). 

Joan has graciously arranged her flights to allow for private coaching on Friday night and Sunday morning, in addition to Saturday night. Any quartet interested MUST BE REGISTERED for the day when requesting private coaching. (Joan’s per hour fee upon request).

Region 15 is pleased to offer a Second Annual Quartet Day on June 1, 2019 in Wood Ridge, New Jersey. The topic will be Barbershop Sound with Joan Boutilier as the guest faculty. 

We had over 50 quartet members in attendance last year and hope to increase that number this year. In addition, please help spread the word that this wonderful opportunity will be open to all musical leaders (directors, assistant directors, dcp members, section leaders), anyone looking for a quartet, and anyone wanting to learn more about this foundational aspect of our art-form.
