The following email was sent to all members of Region 15 on June 8, 2020.
For the past two weeks, the Greater NY / NJ Region, like the rest of the country, has been impacted by the civil unrest following the death of George Floyd at the hands of the police, an incident which has served as a catalyst for our country to address many deep-seated, long-standing issues.
We have seen social media posts from members all over our region who have participated in protest marches, contributed funds to organizations that fight for social justice, voiced their outrage, and tried to educate themselves and others on how to be effective allies. We’ve seen support and concern for honorable police officers who are putting themselves in harm’s way to keep people safe during protests.
As leaders of this region, we want to make this public statement:
We stand with all those who are crying out for change. We condemn racism and police brutality. We respect ethical police officers who put their lives at risk to protect others. We believe in equality and justice for all. We are proud of SAI leadership for taking steps in acknowledging the organization's history with racism and discrimination, and we encourage them to continue working toward greater awareness, understanding, and inclusivity through concrete actions. We hope to once again be able to join our voices to help heal our communities through beautiful and inclusive harmony, diverse chorus and quartet families, and respect for all humans.
